14 Feb - Geeky Toys

Geeky Toys was the subject of the meeting on the 14th February.  Three members brought along their own examples. First up was Dave Omand who produced his camera bag and unloaded the contents - Canon camera, lenses, batteries, filters etc., plus the tripod.  The admirable Open University was also mentioned particularly as Course T189 (Digital Photography) allows one to purchase CS5 and other software at greatly reduced prices as registered students. T189 may well stop at the end of this year. Graham Thomas was next with a demonstration of some of the tools and filter plug-ins available for Photoshop either free or on line for a modest sum. These plug ins allowed a much more artistic feel to be given to images. One particular plug in that could be potentially very useful related to light sources, direction and strength being controllable parameters which gives much greater control over the image without necessarily having expensive lighting rigs.

After coffee and just before we moved onto our last speaker Marny discussed with those present what would be good for the next year and also what could be done during the Summer break, all ideas direct to Marny please. Finally we moved to the last speaker, Dave Townend, who is the grand master of Geeky Toys and he produced a fine array of goodies, ranging from a little catalytic body warmer run on lighter fuel to a featherlight carbon fibre tripod made in China and strong enough to support John Prescott.
