11 Feb - Inter Club Print Competition

The annual Print Day was held on the 11th February at Warminster with seven local clubs participating.  A politician might wrap the results up as "Warminster obtained a significant negative points gain" or, in other words, we came bottom. Devizes won and the best individual print was "The Last Furlong" by the redoubtable Patrick Emery from Frome Wessex.  Our judge was Tony Byram, ARPS, who handled his task efficiently without raising the muttered hints of rebellion often heard on these occasions.

The day commenced with an introduction to all from our own chair Mil who then handed over to Tony who gave us a very interesting presentation using his own prints. The presentation covered many aspects but what most will remember is likely to be his two “panels” based on the Venetian Mask Carnival. During the interval attendees had the opportunity to view them close up to see for themselves the high quality of his work.

After the interval we went on to the main event which as was stated earlier did not go too well for us. However we must give hearty congratulations to the overall winners Devizes Camera Club and to Patrick Emery (Frome Wessex CC) with his print The Last Furlong which was adjudged (and rightly so IMHO) to be the Best Print. Full results can be found here.

Congratulations also should be given to our own club members:

20 Marks - Tina Townend with her print Juvenile Kingfisher in the Rain

19 Marks - Huw Alban with his print Perils off Peverill Point

18 Marks - Graham Spencer with his print Poultney Bridge

No doubt there will be an inquest on why we did badly this year and guilty parties will be sentenced to write "I must always use RAW and never block up highlights" 400 times.  Better luck next year!

A big thanks to the committee who did lots of work priot to the event and members on the day; Mike Williams, who masterminded the event with much help from other members, Mil Chimley for the introductions and getting round the other club reps to make sure they were happy, Marny Thompson for the food preparation, Dianne Driscoll for running the raffle, Dave Omand for keeping the scores, Don Harrison for obtaining some pictures from the day and Peter Jane for manning the turnstile. Finally and almost most importantly the 'go-fors'; Marc Williamson, Graham Thomas, Priscilla Daniell, Kathryn Beardsall, 'The Morgans', Brian Matthews and Trevor Goddard - Without you all it would not have been possible to run the day.

On the subject of thanks we mustn’t forget the judge, Tony, who entertained us before the interval and made an excellent job of judging a very challenging event whilst keeping precisely to the timetable.

Finally thanks also to all those from the other clubs who turned up, entered prints and generally made the day the success it was.
