10 Jan - Chris Palmer

"The Prints and the Paper" was the title of Chris Palmer's talk to the club on the 10th January.  As befits a photographer sponsored by Fotospeed, all of his pictures consisted of prints on that company's papers.  He began by showing black and white images, some printed on their new baryta paper.  This, while using the same inks as on their "platinum" material, gives a subtle warm tone, an effect similar to the switch from bromide to chlorobromide in the old days.

Chris's pictures were characterised by great delicacy of tones - there was little evidence of heavy shadows.  He determined the appearance of the final image before pressing the shutter and reckoned not to crop the image subsequently.  He made discreet use of Photoshop but was very careful about the mounting of the prints.

Apart from giving talks, Chris Palmer, ARPS, runs workshops and is a competition judge.
